Films That Opened Eyes
Nobody changes from a fact sheet. They change from a story that won't leave them alone. Here are the ones that have done the most quiet work.
01Start with one documentary
Dominion (2018) — the hardest one. Narrated by Joaquin Phoenix, Rooney Mara, Sia. The film most people credit for the switch. Free on YouTube.
The Game Changers (2018) — athletes, performance, the science of recovery. The easiest one to watch with someone who isn't sure.
Cowspiracy (2014) — the environmental case, walked back from the headlines. Older but still hits.
Forks Over Knives (2011) — the health case, in a tone your parents will tolerate.
Seaspiracy (2021) — fish, fishing, oceans. Polarizing but undeniably moving.
Eating Our Way to Extinction (2021) — broad, beautifully shot, narrated by Kate Winslet.
02Three books worth the week
How Not to Die — Michael Greger, MD. Dense, sourced, life-changing for anyone who likes evidence.
Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, and Wear Cows — Melanie Joy. The psychology piece nobody else writes about.
Eating Animals — Jonathan Safran Foer. A novelist becomes a father and goes looking for an answer. The most beautifully written of the bunch.
03If you only have an hour
Watch Dominion. Don't watch alone. Don't watch on a full stomach. Don't watch if you're not ready. But if you're already asking the question, this is the film that answers it.
04After you watch
Sit with it. Don't post about it. Don't argue about it. Just notice what you want to do next. The most honest changes come from a quiet room, not a comment thread.
