Slipping Is Part of It
Nobody does this perfectly. The people who keep it up for years aren't the strict ones — they're the gentle ones. Here's how to be one of them.
01The rule that beats every other rule
One imperfect plant-based meal is better than zero. One imperfect plant-based week is better than zero. A person trying this messily for ten years moves the world more than a person doing it perfectly for three months and burning out. Optimize for the decade, not the dinner.
02What to do when you slip
Notice. Don't narrate. The story you tell yourself about the slip does more damage than the slip ever could — “I'm not really vegan,” “I knew I couldn't do this,” “might as well order the steak.”
Skip the story. Have the next plant-based meal. That's the whole repair.
03Eating out, anywhere
Read the menu before you arrive. Most restaurants have one or two plant-based dishes you'd miss on the first pass — the sides, the appetizers, the pasta with a small modification.
Ask kindly. “Could I get this without the cheese?” is a sentence every server has heard a thousand times. They don't care. Order, eat, enjoy the company.
If the only option is a side salad and bread, eat the side salad and bread. You're not graded on this.
04Travel without stress
Pack snacks. Search “vegan” + the city the night before. Indian, Ethiopian, Thai, Mexican, Italian, Vietnamese, Lebanese — every one of these has deep plant-based options nearly anywhere on earth. Grocery stores always have fruit, hummus, bread, and nut butter. You will not starve.
05Family meals and holidays
Offer to bring a dish. Make it the best thing on the table. Don't lecture. Don't audit anyone else's plate. Be the cousin people are glad showed up.
The most persuasive thing you can do is be visibly fine — well-fed, happy, easy to be around. That is the entire conversation.
06When you want to quit
Lower the bar. Drop to plant-based dinners only for a month. Or weekdays only. Or just breakfast and lunch. Reset the line wherever you can hold it, then live there a while.
The goal was never perfection. The goal was less harm, more often, for longer. You're still doing the thing.
